Thread: MAJOR Forum Software Upgrade

    MAJOR Forum Software Upgrade

The forum has undergone a major software upgrade to VBulletin 4.2 As always, this means stuff is probably broken, or doesn't act like we expect it to act at first.

Please reply to this thread with anything funky you see, and I'll start hunting the bugs down.

One thing I'm already seeing is difficulty with the Facebook login, and also the "What's New" function has been replaced by what they are calling the "Activity Stream." Not sure if that's going to be as good as our formerly modded What's New, but I'll give it a chance.

T yup seems to work... (although it won't allow horizontal spreading...)
The power of an Atom is a terrible thing to waste! Atom owner/operator since 2007. The more you chase perfection, the faster it becomes. John Force for President! (I asked him once in person...he laughed)

If it wasn't for "standards creep" on the server side, I would have taken the source to an older Mozilla and beaten it into submission and used it forever. Anyway, this is not a problem I've ever encountered with other vBulletin sites (running a variety of versions), but has persisted here over a number of updates. This makes me think there's a site customization / template that is causing the problem.New since the latest update is a problem where the editor is dropping the space at the end of a sentence. I don't think I'm going senile... In my previous reply (regarding articles), my last sentence completely vanished and I had to re-type it.Also, paragraph breaks are being de-paragraphed.

Hmm... are they working for you in the other browsers? I only have IE9 (and I'm also running in Enhanced Interface mode).

You could be right, however the only template mod currently installed is the flags (and based on the code, it's not likely that's causing the problem). I've disabled a couple other plugins we've been using, so the only ones active now are DTO Garage (well known), vbSEO (also well known) and the CMS stuff provided by vBulletin. Please let me know if that solved any of the probs.

That also in IE8? I just tested (see above) with Chrome and IE9 and couldn't reproduce the bug, which makes it hard for me to test fixes. Lemme know if going down to the bare minimum of plugins solved all, part, or none of the issues you're seeing. Thanks!

Yes. But it isn't just my PC's installation of IE8. I logged in from a computer that had never visited AAChat before which is also running IE8, and I'm seeing the same thing. A further observation is that the "advanced editing" widgets on the top of the reply text entry box don't show up at all in IE8. If I click the "broken page" icon to the right of the address bar, IE8 goes into IE7 compatibility mode. In that mode, the outlines of the advanced editing widgets show up, but not the contents, and they don't do anything. However, paragraph breaks work and cookies show up.

Perhaps vBulletin's IE8 handling is just broken? That would be surprising, as it still has a reasonably large market share. Doing a "view page source", there's some disgusting code in there. It also looks like CloudFlare is on again. Can we try it with CloudFlare off? There's also some Google YUI stuff in there. Given that Gmail recently started telling people who used Opera to switch to Chrome, this could also be a Google trick. "Don't be evil - or at least, try not to get caught".

Also, I ran into something every time I tried to log in here from a new browser or when logging in from a different system - each time (4 different instances), my username / password was not recognized when entered in the top-of-page login boxes. I'd get the "You have used 1 of 5 incorrect password attempts" and the full-screen username / password dialog box. Entering the exact same info there logged me in successfully.

If you need an IE8 system to test with, I can give you temporary access to a system via VNC (special client or Java-based viewer).
