Black flagged for ..flames out the back!

Got the black flag the other day as corner workers were reporting intermittent balls of fire out the back of the car...so I pulled in for a look-see. Little bits of oil were all over the back of the car and under the tea tray.Hmm.. it seems the catch can was full, and oil was coming out the vents, and onto the hot exhaust.. I brought it back to my pit and tried to drain the tank..what a shitty setup! Oil drooling all over everything!

So, I decided to make life much easier when draining the catch can in the future. I bought a 1/8"npt x 1/4" barbed tube nipple,a 1/8"npt x 1/8"npt street 90 degree elbow fitting, a 1/4" fuel shut off valve and some 1/4" fuel line and made an easy to drain setup. I removed the stock "drain" petcock, screwed in the street elbow, then the barbed fitting,a length of 1/4" fuel line down to the 14/" fuel shutoff (available at most any parts store) and another length of 1/4" fuel line to the bottom of the frame. perfect! Even when the engine is hot, easy peasy to empty the can!

Street 90 elbow and barbed nipple and 1/4" line installed on can

    fuel shutoff valve

Materials needed (plus some small clamps)

Cheap and effective. Just don't forget to drain it occasionally...

In a pinch, a standard paper plate folded in half, V folded in and amongst, acts as a great diverter to pour into a water bottle for later proper disposal.

The more important issue as why is it making that much oil. I found that to be a good health indicator. When my motor was "well" it made virtually none, when it was sick it would make more and when it was fixing to crap the bed it would make alot.

This was "Docs" maiden run, and it may have been a tad overfilled in the sump. (oops..) plus I had not drained the can from the previous owner, who probably never drained it either. Max does it occasionally as well(pukes into can) especially on a hot day (80+ degrees)..so I think it's more a case of me neglecting to drain the can routinely. My other forced induction vehicles do it as well (one or two tablespoons of oil after an hr. + of track time) and no engine issues..so I'm not really concerned about anything wrong internally.

I tried wedging some alu foil under the stock drain, and then trying to manipulate that petcock...tough to do without making a mess no matter what. It's a tight spot to put a drain.

Oh yeah, that too they don't like any more oil than they like. Any excess comes right out like milk out of a 2 year old's nose.

After I drained it,I ran the car for about 2hrs on track, and had about 2oz. in the can at the end. About what I normally see. Now that it is easy to drain, I won't put off proper maintenance. The corner workers did say it was pretty cool looking...hmm..no wonder I wasn't passed much...

Funky funnels..paper plates..alu foil...it's a suck ass place to work in. I prefer to avoid it ever again, and use my remote drain setup..

replace it with a vacuum pump and direct the hose to the ground. That's what I did, instant oil slick.

Well yeah.. but at the track 500 miles away from home, 30 minutes before the next heat.. funky paper plates, zip ties, and duct tape beats not running a session you paid for..

paper plate trumps your spilling oil everywhere...

With a hot engine,I don't care what you put under that catch can..it's a suck job. $10 worth of materials and I never have to worry about it again..and I'll keep the plates for my lunch.. (I don't pay for sessions..I'm an instructor..)
