    Exclamation Whoops: CRASH

Only 10 days in and bent metal already – it wasn't my fault your honour, I promise.

So I was happily pootling down the road after getting my new tyres – 3 to 5mph max – 2 car lengths in front of me, traffic in-front, behind and stationary to my right (UK).

Smiles, waves, toot on the horn and several camera phone pictures made me forget it was raining – all was good with the world.

Someone in their near new looking VW Polo was starring in utter disbelief at the car, I spotted them starring at me from a good 30 metres or so away, all the way up to me, beside me and then – BANG, straight into the back of the car in front of them – STILL LOOKING AT ME

Not sure how they’re going to pop that on their insurance claim.

    Whoops, sorry.

I don't know them, they were just so mesmerised by the Atom that they drove into the car in front.

I shrugged and continued driving at 3mph.

    Does this happen often?

Oh, I mis-read and thought they hit you. I have had it happen once myself, a VW (again) just drove out into traffic.

I thought it was your car that was damaged at first. Glad it wasnt you.

Yes. I routinely have to point at people and then point to the car in front of them so they dont run into it.

    Hi DonnyMac,

Glad it wasn't your car after your triumph against the elements to get it home.

YES! Onlookers do get mesmerized by the Atom and do also do stupid things. I even once had a driver trying to film my atom with his phone out his side widow. This was on the motor way with everyone traveling at 100kph and not once did he check his forward vision.

The best thing you can do is to give the military signal (figures at eyes, then away) for look around or keep an eye out. That normally snaps them out of it. If not, choose you own finger gesture.

    AtomJohnny offered a great tip

Like the others said, I'm just glad you didn't bend YOUR CAR. Its tragic when one of the few Unicorns on earth... (The Atom) gets damaged. It also hurts the ego. Happy Motoring! Spectators be careful!

After I drove my Atom cross-country in 2006, I was driving it in Pennsylvania (still on the Oregon temp plate) when someone driving a pickup truck got so interested in looking at my Atom that they ignored the road and drove up onto a curb at 60+ MPH. They rolled the pickup truck, which came to rest on its side in a McDonald's parking lot.
