A friend ran across an aerial photo of Vanport City, OR (must have been in the early 1940's), so for grins I distorted a GoogleEarth image from the same area so that it overlays and you can see how the track relates to the old town. Kinda cool.

yep, the back straight was once the main avenue there. It was all low cost housing and a flood wiped it all out and no one rebuilt it. So for a long time there was only streets and rubble and people would go out and race around the empty streets for fun. The City bought it and made it PIR. One of the few city owned tracks. Despite all the people who want to tear it down for condos, it still makes this citty like $300K in profit every year.
My parents lived in VanPort at the time of the flood.
They were on the way home from McMinnville when the news hit the radio. They had no home to go to...
I didn't show up for a few more years.
