If I were to build a downforce body for the Atom

I think I would use the 2012 Corvette Daytona Prototype as a starting template, but maybe stay open cockpit. Other than a slightly higher rear deck, I think you could put a very similar body on the Atom chassis with no structural changes. I love the styling, but might mute a few of the corvette influences.

Hot damn that Corvette DP is sex on wheels. Even an upside down boat hull would be an improvement for the Atom...aero was certainly not a consideration when being designed.

I've often thought of skinning the car...but somehow,it always seems to be...too much bother...

The power of an Atom is a terrible thing to waste! Atom owner/operator since 2007. The more you chase perfection, the faster it becomes. John Force for President! (I asked him once in person...he laughed)

CalScot thought about something similar. If you have the desire and the means to do it, more power to you! It would be a fascinating project to watch develop.

That's where I got the idea. I don't have the time or money right now, but might tackle it at some point down the line.

If I remember right, Calscot was saying the suspension on the atom really isn't up to the challenge of too much downforce. Its just not designed that way, and you'd pretty much be bottomed out the entire time you got up to speed.

The suspension would work fine, it would just take re-springing and revalving the coilovers.

TMI has strain gauges on their test mule and they have empirically validated that the wings do work (IE the car squats a few mm at high speed with the wings).

I think Pete's idea was to run a removable body to have two cars in one, but was scuttled because the suspension setup would be radically different on either car.

If you ran a permanent body on the frame, once you got the suspension dialed in, presumably you'd be faster around a given track. [/bench racing] That being said, it would be a lot of work to get right.

With modifications, the Atoms suspension is quite capable of handling some extra downforce...but I'm not sure it needs much more...

It needs less wind resistance...I would like my car to slip through the air with a bit more grace than a cheese grater..

However,a full body do-over won't happen for me. If I wanted that,I'd buy a Diasio 962R (turbo). A very affordable, dependable, fast, full aero enclosed supercar...(track ony though in USA)
