I don't recall what the Spec price was but that price, whatever it was, had strings attached. 80% mandatory participation in the Spec Atom races where tires, fuel, travel and accommodation were on the participant. I never learned what happened if you failed to meet the reqs.

Perhaps $40K isn't that bad if you're willing to add the lights and parking brake yourself.

Many states require fenders..windshields..wipers...a title...OBDII compliance..catalytic converters..etc.,although some states require next to nothing but your registration money. I think if you wanted to drive your Atom on the street,starting with a "street" Atom makes more sense than a "Spec racer Atom". You can still find Atom2's in the $40k range with low miles and titles popping up on Ebay etc. I wonder if TMI will allow the 2011 Spec racer Atoms to compete in next years "Spec" season,or will you be required to buy a new 2012 Spec racer Atom?

Fortunately, I'm in one of those states where there's a slightly greater illusion of personal freedom than you poor East coast people. I don't need fenders, OBD2 compliance, windshield, wipers, bumpers, antilock brakes, traction control, airbags, tire pressure sensors, a title, car alarms, OnStar with satellite GPS tracking, datalogging ECUs and 4G Wifi Nanny.

If that garbage is a requirement where you live then I can think of better things to spend $70,000 on, namely moving to somewhere that doesn't require that.

As for a Spec Racer. I'd assume that if you meet the current "Spec" for racing you should be able to race any Atom in that venue. Spec Miatas have a large population of drivers/cars because there's a lot of hardware and drivers. More Atoms all over the US would mean more Atom enthusiasts interested in gentlemanly wheel-to-wheel racing in Atoms.

Spec Miatas can come from any Miata ever made,and only need to conform to the Specified build rules for class when you show up to race and past tech at a sanctioned Spec Miata race venue.The TMIs Spec Atom series REQUIRED you to buy a new Spec Atom race car from them to participate in the series and earn points.They did for 2011..and who knows about 2012? Not the same as Spec Miata,where you can build one yourself.Many states have strict guidelines for car registration requirements and inspection.If you are lucky enough to be in one that is less strict..how nice. However,I doubt anyone would relocate just to drive a car that does not pass inspection/registration in their home state. But..you never know...
