I'm currently testing a couple lightweight prototype batteries in my motorcycle and my commuter car as potential candidates for replacing the 14 pound Braile in my Atom. Expected weight will be about 2.5 pounds.

    1.5 pound (L) and 2 pound (R) batteries (14.5lb Odyssey PC680 in background).

So far it cranks fine in -8˚F weather, Cranks fine 100˚F weather. One year warranty, shelf life (no voltage drop) of about 2 years without a battery tender (assuming no electrical load sucking power). This is a LiFePO4 variety that has much nicer behavior to being punctured than lithium polymer type batteries that seem to catch fire and is pretty reasonably priced too. My commuter car has worked flawlessly for the last 7 months and I think I'm sold. I'll order a slightly bigger one for the Atom for a little extra padding when the time comes. It seems to be one of the most cost-effective ways to drop 12 pounds off the car.

sounds like a cool replacement for whenever a new battery is needed

    what's the expected cost?

It appears to cost... One Dolla

If it is Braille lithium battery money then I'd rather hand crank it.

If you mean this style Lithium Braile battery:
    http://www.braillebattery.com/index....tteries/ml9c/#
Then no, it's nothing like that price.

It's a prototype I made/assembled after researching the type and manufacturer of that battery. Seeing as how the prototypes are one-offs there's no "production" price yet. I only know the price of raw materials for the ones I made were which are nowhere near $1000. I'm sure I could plan for a run or group buy which would get me a deal on the raw materials and I can assemble and ship them to any other interested Atom owners.

The caveats about the style of battery are that it does not have a large amp/hour capacity. Without a physical electrical system disconnect or a battery tender it will drain relatively quickly if left parked for long periods or if the lights/ignition are left on accidentally. Discharging it dead-flat or exceding 150˚F within the battery componenets will likely compromise longevity. Replacement for such damage might not be covered under warranty. I currenlty only know what works for my non-supercharged Atom and don't know how well they will work for those of you with large superchargers or other accessories to turn over. If I oversize it by 50% to CYA it should be fairly universal but will make it a little heavier (approx 3.5lb)

Anyone with a high compression, supercharged or large displacement 4-banger at sea level want to be a guinea pig?

I doubt supercharging adds much to cranking, they just aren't moving fast enough yet. I am stock compression, and those that have upped their compression are the one's you want. Great idea BTW!

Why would you need a higher amp battery for higher compression? Does it really take that much more power to turn over a high compression engine to get it started?

Yes it does. How many ratio points up did you go?

im at 10:1 Darth is at 10.5:1

By the way, time to stick my nose up again at all those people that said I'd blow up my engine at anything higher than 8:1 (that includes the professional engine builder).

I might be a good tester since I have 180,000 miles of wire in my car for all the gadgets
