Maybe because Washington got militant about revoking registrations on Atoms, and even had some flunky who spent his time trolling the internet for pics of Atoms with Washington plates so that they could invalidate them.

Pretty much! I actually had it in Illinois, but exact same story. I have family and a friend at a tag agency in Oklahoma, so it was easy to do there. Otherwise I'd have figured out Montana or Indiana or Michigan.

It's SUCH BS, it makes me want to just move to Florida, where they don't care what it is.

That's ancient history. It was settled in court many years ago. It's very easy to register an Atom in WA now, either as a normal car or as a collectible vehicle. WA House Bill 2359 even exempts collectible vehicles from smog checks:

There are plenty of Atoms registered in WA. Starting in 2020, WA is even eliminating the smog check program for all cars.

If you're a WA resident, the only reason to register in Montana now is to avoid paying sales tax to WA, which is a misdemeanor in WA. Don't do it.

See paragraph (6) of RCW 46.16A.030...

I no longer live in WA. I moved across the river to Portland. AND, I don't currently HAVE an Atom. Just trying to pass along what some of my friends went through back in the day.

Thanks, I fixed the link. And I'm just trying to provide accurate current information on the situation. You wouldn't want prospective Atom owners to read this thread and think that Atoms are still difficult to register in Washington, would you?
