That's a great suggestion, but there's no way around that.

The software counts all media types (images and videos) when it makes that count, and includes the smilies as images.

I believe in having some limit on the number (what's acceptable to one may be excessive to another), since a user could post X number of full-size embedded images in a row on a thread. That slows down the page, and the search engines punish slow sites (not just for overall image load times, but it counts the number of connections per page against you).

All that said, I've doubled it to 16. If that results in annoying threads, we can scale it back a bit.

It's not likely, unless we get LOTS of threads like that. Posts like that are rare, and the info is interesting and valuable. So when it's appropriate, go for it.
