Has anyone actually measured brake temperatures?

Has anyone measured brake temperature on track?

Going through pad selection process - currently have DCT-70 which need higher temp to operate vs what TMI puts on new SRAs - DCT-30.

Will get brake temperature paint and figure out how now mine get eventually - but may need to decide on brake pads before I will have data...

    Thank you
    Aleks

That graph is helpful. Definitely going to try to figure out my brake temp next track session.

Wow, I love mappings like that. I found one for tires, see Temperature Targets for Track Use slide here:

Wilwood has a similar mapping for their brake compounds on their website.

It's amazing that they can get the compounds to have an almost perfectly constant coefficient of friction over such a wide range. By contrast, tire tech is not quite there yet it appears.

I felt the DT70 really never got hot enough to give much bite at lower temps. I switched to Wilwood Polymetric A compound for my SRA and they do BITE. A lot of torque even when very cold. Will take some getting used to . I could apply a lot of brake pressure and never lock up wheels on the DT70. Now I have to be very careful, especially during heal/toe to not lock up wheels. Slow the car very quickly however Jury is still out.

I like the DT70 myself. Yes, the brakes need a lot of pressure first lap out but it's not as though my tires have much grip either. Unlike say R7 compounds which can never be brought into optimal temp range I am guessing that DT70s do get into optimal temp range during the first lap. I could be wrong, but that's my butt feel. If they do come into optimal temp range then it's rather a good deal to use them on track as you never have to worry about them getting too hot and they last a while.

I get Wilwood pads cheap, so I have tried many. My driving is typically the aggressive street style--I live in the mountains and can blast up a twisty mountain road anytime, but it still is not like track driving.

The Wilwood BP-10(street) feels wooden, the BP-20(agressive street) is better, and the Polymatrix E is probably the best Wilwood pad I have found for very, very aggressive mountain road driving in the lightweight Atom. They screech in city driving and need heat to work. The Polymatrix D were my favorites, but they are no longer made. Even with my discount( I usually got them free), I have switched to other brands. I like an immediate response on the brakes--I don't like to wait for the pad to grab. So, currently I am running the EBC greens and they are the best pad I have found for my style of driving. Ironically, I tried the EBC Greens on my STI and hated them.....I may try the Hawk HP+ next...

This is interesting. I've only done 4 days total in the SRA thus far - so still very much learning it. Its setup is straight from factory with DTC70 and Hoosier R7. I agree the DTC70 doesn't offer much bite, but I'd been attributing that to manual brakes (vs. boosted brakes I've used for past 10 years). Maybe it is the an issue with temps, I hadn't thought of that. But never the less - I haven't really minded the lack of bite, like you say, really hard to lock the wheels - which is good. For all the SRA's capabilities, braking may be the most impressive. I'm so impressed with it that I haven't given any thought that a switch in pad may make it even better. One of the problems is pads last so long I can't try a variety of options LOL.

Argonaut I am probably going to do a Pitt Race HPDE at end of June with AutoInterest. They are a great group and allow Atoms. If you can make that, you can do a couple laps in my car to feel the difference. I am running BFG R1S with Wilwood Polymetric A pads which is very different than the R7 with Hawk DT70 I ran last year.
