    SMOG certification request during renewal

I have an Atom 3 (2012 car) that is registered under SPCNS (SB100). This was done by the original owner. When i purchased and registered the car first time and did my yearly registration last year, a copy of the SB100 sticker seemed enough to continue and get my tags. (Although there always seems to be some confusion when done in person).

This year it looks like they've requested a SMOG, even though I did the same as last year - perhaps because its breached the new car (4 years or less rule). Anyone else gone through this process with a car of similar age. Engine/Yr/MK on the SB100 notes as 2012/Honda/2. Car came from TMI without CAT but assuming they would run test via OBD2 port instead anyway?

Does it sound right that it should now be doing the SMOG (and would still expect to pass if tested) or was the original process done wrong? ie. SPCNS (SB100) should be SMOG exempt or not in this case.

Any insights would be appreciate before I check in with SMOG/DMV and such.

In CA? If it was titled under SB100, it shouldn't require a smog test beyond the initial one done when going through the process. How is it titled, like what year does it say the car model is?

Yeah - in CA. The SB100 sticker states

    Yr/mk/model: 2012 SPCNS Ariel Atom
    eng/Yr/mk/size: 2012/Honda/2.4

Wow, mine reads; 1960 SPCNS Ariel Atom. I think that MAY be the reason for the smog requirement.

Yes, CA will make you SMOG the car even though it is exempt... Technically, the car is exempt from the emission rules, but not the testing or the basic PCV requirement. The technician at the smog test will enter the info into the computer, check for a PCV, stick the the probe into the tailpipe and run the test. After the car fails the test, you will car will "magically" pass the test via its exemption....

I go though this every five years with my 1955 Chevy Nomad.

Thanks for the response...jeff8407, thats a pretty useful data point. Since I wasn't sure I scheduled a Smog Check Referee appointment to get this figured out. It sounds like it might be worth dropping by a regular SMOG place tomorrow and giving that a try and then use the apt if that doesn't resolve it. I figured if it was a mistake, the BAR referee might be able to correct.

Just an FYI. I'm in Nevada and we have similar smog test requirements. I thought with the Atom 3's OBDII port, it would be smog compliant. I was wrong. The OEM Hondata ECU is not programed to respond to smog test inquiries. I had to replace the original ECU with a KPro unit and have a certified Hondata Tech set it up. He also fitted a second O2 sensor with "Check Engine Light".

The technician who helped me was Warren Mak. The contacts I have are:
(650)872-2354, (916)852-6887, (415)850-5698 and his website: nosh2289crx@aol.com. He specialized in Hondas. His tune with 91 octane fuel increased the rearwheel HP from 202 to 221.

Also, make sure your valve cover breather/port is connected to the intake tract. A breather that vents to atmosphere is not allowed!
