What would be the best engine and dual clutch combination that would fit in an Atom? Assume that, "None, because doing so would be heresy" is not on the table as an answer. Big assumption, I know, but go with it.

You'd need to figure out what front wheel drive cars have the combination with a dual clutch.
The GMC Granite concept car in 2010 had an ecotec with a 6 speed dual clutch trans. I wonder what transmission they used or if it was something custom.

Interesting idea. Another issue might be size, just installing the Quaife six speed conversion is tight. A dual clutch will be a sizable housing more than likely.
what's the benefit of a double clutch system?
It adds weight to the back of the car which helps compensate for a very light front end.
A dual clutch can act as an automatic and is the basis of the flappy paddle gear box for many manufacturers, although some actually do use automatics. At least that is my understanding
PDK allows comfortable road driving and capability for shift times in milliseconds on the track. And just wondering how/when/if the technology could ever find its way into an Atom. Most of the major manufacturers are abandoning manual transmissions entirely (again, not trying to debate the wisdom in doing that). I would think there is an Ariel demographic who would at least want the option of having best-of-breed technology. If Porsche and Ferrari and Audi, etc. do it ...
Plus, there are times on track when I feel a need to shift, but the last thing I want to do is take a hand off the wheel.
if I was going to try and get the benefits of a dual clutch given the cost of engine and transmission and the customization and tuning to make it work, I would just go with a hewland sequential box for $15K and get some paddles to run it.
