Thread: Wilwood rotors - minimum useable thickness?

    Question Wilwood rotors - minimum useable thickness?

    Anyone know the minimum thickness that's useable for the Wilwood rotors? This is the Wilwood 160-5840 disc (link here) that came as a part of the 2-piece rotor/hat set up from Brammo on the USA Atom 2. I did some searching but can't find a spec - either on the web or on the rotor itself.

    New, they're .81" thick. My fronts are starting to look pretty skinny and currently measure .700".

    I don't know the answer to your question, but, I am thinking at the price of those rotors you have reached where my comfort point would be.

    how many miles has it taken to wear them down to .700?

    Regardless of how I feel about continuing to use them, I'm still wondering what that min spec number is.

    I'm now at about 20,000 miles over 5 years of ownership, and that includes 5 cross-country trips (trip from Oregon to my home 6 states away when I bought the car, and 4 Hot Rod Power Tour events). Most of those miles are on the street with Wilwood PolyMatrix pads, with about 10 to 15 track events (HPDE, auto-x) using Hawk DTC-70 pads. These Hawk pads are outstanding, as long as you don't let the dust sit on your wheels. Little bit of moisture hits it and it must chemically bond to the wheel surface and will NEVER come off.

    Unless a person has a caliper and looks at that .1" difference visually/comparatively, they probably wouldn't realize how much it actually is. For a spec normally measured in thousandths, a tenth of an inch does look pretty massive.

    I put those same Hawk pads on about 3000 miles ago, great improvement.....of course my factory wilwood pads had bit the dust, had chunks missing out of them, it's been great since!

    I called Wilwood and got the answer. The minimum useable thickness of any Wilwood rotor is supposed to be the thickness when new minus .060" (60 thousandths of an inch). So on this model, that would be .75". The minus .060 applies to all of their rotors apparently.

    So I guess I got my money's worth out of these.
