The instruments are stepper motor driven, not your conventional analogue electrical gauge, therefore the needles will stay where they were when power is cut to the motors.

Being off zero also helps on start up. Unless you have some expensive method of remembering position, the first step in a motion application is to establish the Home or Zero point. Thats why when you first power the dash you see the needle drive back to the brass stop pin and then forward to the zero mark.

Just saw a clip on a race between LFA and GTR, the LFA engine revs so quickly that no analog gauge can keep up so they had to use digital. Doesn't the GB version of Atom 3.5 now use digital dash as well? Besides Bolus' chicken says the analog is wrong.
